Tech Insurance: Should You Get AppleCare+?

So you finally got your hands on your new and shiny Apple iPhone. You’re probably excited to use it, take it around everywhere with you, and do all the stuff you’d normally do on all your other smartphones, only this time it’ll be a lot faster.

Now you think to yourself, “gosh this is pretty expensive, I should probably protect it in some way,” and to be honest, a lot of people do take extra effort to protect their investments, as Apple products, in particular, aren’t really cheap. A lot of the time, most people will probably put a screen protector and case on their phone, and will happily go about their day.

However, if you’re unsure about your ability to keep a phone in good working condition, then Apple does offer an insurance service of sorts, called AppleCare+. If this is your first time hearing about it, then you’ll want to read on about what Applecare is, and what it does.

What’s AppleCare+?

While Apple doesn’t necessarily refer to AppleCare+ as “insurance” per se, it functions similarly as it does offer you some peace of mind in the event that your Apple device gets damaged or runs into some issues. You’ll also get access to technical support, hardware servicing, and software support for your devices.

This doesn’t only apply to iPhones – virtually all of the company’s hardware products (at least in the UK) are covered by Applecare, and this includes iPads, Macs, Apple Watch, Apple TV, monitors, headphones, HomePods, and even the iPod.

While these products already come with warranty support from Apple, Applecare+ gives you extended support beyond the one-year warranty that comes with the device, and comes with two instances of accidental damage repair, at discounted prices every year (12 months).

What does it Offer?

If you’re thinking of signing up, then there are two options available, which include AppleCare+, and AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, which includes the perks in the “base” AppleCare+ insurance plan, plus coverage for an additional two instances of theft and loss.

Apple does explicitly mention that you’ll need to have the “Find My’ feature enabled on your device “at the time it is lost or stolen and throughout the claims process.

Additionally, if you’re signed up for the service, Apple says that you’ll have access to round-the-clock support either by chat or phone calls, “same-day” service in most metropolitan areas, and they’ll even send you a temporary replacement device in case you have to send your damaged one for repair.

Applecare+ for iPhone also includes software support, so you’ll be able to get assistance with software troubleshooting, which includes issues with iOS, cloud services, and more.

Should You Get It?

As far as insurance services go, AppleCare+ does offer some great perks and services, should you be in a situation where your device is damaged or in need of a bit of troubleshooting. Of course, there are several prices available depending on your device, which can range from £3.49 per month to £119 for three years. Given that it’s essentially an Apple-branded insurance plan, you can rest assured that the service you’ll be getting is top-notch.
