Is the Vivo X Fold the Best Camera Foldable?

The launch of the Vivo X Fold signified the brand’s forward push into the Android foldable market. However, in a landscape dominated by Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Flip devices, as well as entries from Motorola, Microsoft, and more, the X Fold needs to do a lot in order to stand out from the crowd.

As such, Vivo has decided to pack the X Fold with a lot of impressive hardware, both on the inside and outside. For example, it’s got an AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, is 6.53 inches wide, with a resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels. The device opens up to reveal an 8-inch foldable AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and a total resolution of 1916 x 2160 pixels.

In terms of speed and performance, Vivo has equipped the phone with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which is one of the most powerful mobile chipsets on the market right now.

Performance aside though, the X Fold also has to contend with the imaging capabilities of rival devices. It comes with a quad-lens set-up with a 50 MP, f/1.8 main sensor, an 8MP, f/3.4 periscope telephoto lens, a 12MP, f/2.0 telephoto lens, and a 48 MP, f/2.2 ultrawide sensor – all of the cameras feature Zeiss optics as well, which aside from sounding nice, no doubt helps a bit with the optical prowess of the phone. There’s also a front-facing 16 MP, f/2.5 camera for selfies.

The circular camera model and Zeiss branding do bring back memories of Nokia’s Lumia 1020, as it featured a similar-looking camera bump on the back.

With that said, we took the Vivo X Fold out for a spin – the weather was on-point and we were able to take some gorgeous shots in broad daylight. Check out some of these photo samples:

While a lot of smartphone camera tests are subjective, the X Fold nevertheless manages to capture great-looking photos, especially when outdoors. Images don’t come out too saturated, and dynamic range was mostly on-point. Likewise, portrait shots featured just the right amount of blur without making the images look artificial, and edge detection was nicely implemented by the X Fold’s camera set-up. We have a full video which includes more photo samples, as well as video footage recorded on the phone.
